NCC Boss @ NUC, Tours NgREN

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, on Friday, 13 May, 2016, paid a visit to his counterpart, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON, and the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) facilities, to see firsthand the NgREN project, which has increased opportunities for collaborative research amongst Nigerian universities and other RENs around the world. The visit afforded the NCC Boss the opportunity to identify areas of mutual collaboration with the NUC, in order to join forces together in deploying critical infrastructure to improve resource sharing among institutions.

UNIABUJA expels 54 students for examination misconduct

Speaking to nucbulletin.blogspot.com, the Deputy Registrar (Information) of the institution, Mr. Waziri Garba, said that the decision to expel the students was endorse by the Senate of the University.

It added that the decision followed the recommendations by the central examination misconduct committee the senate set up earlier to investigate the allegations of examination malpractices against the students.

The statement showed that 21 of the expelled students were from the Faculty of Social Science, 16 from Science, 11 from Education while 3 students each were expelled from the Faculties of Law and Management Sciences.

The University, according to the statement, also approved the rustication of 19 students from the institution spanning various academic periods.

The statement said that 14 of the students were rusticated for one academic session while five were rusticated for one semester and to carry over their courses.

The statement reads: “Of those rusticated, seven were from the Faculty of Arts, four from Social Science, three each from the Faculties of Science and Education and two from the Faculty of Management Sciences.”

MAINONE to Leverage on NgREN to Improve Internet Access in Varsities

A delegation from MAINONE International, led by the Chief Executive officer, Mrs Funke Opeke, on Wednesday, 4 May, 2016, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary, national Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON, to seek for ways to leverage on the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) to improve on the INTERNET services of its clients in the Universities.

Receiving the delegation, Professor Okojie, who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary (DES) Professor Chinedu Mafiana, briefed it on the roles, functions and responsibilities of Nuc in the Nigerian University System (NUS). He stated that the major challenges confronting the system were Access and Quality, but that the commission was doing its best to address them, through inspection, monitoring, and other regulatory activities.

Professor Munzali Lists Remedies For Corruption, Bad Goverenance And Insurgency

The former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Munzali Jibril, OFR, has listed remedies for Corruption, Bad Governance and Insurgency to include the removal of immunity clause from the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria through an amendment of Section 308 and Conversion of the Sagay Advisory Committee Against Corruption into a powerful Anti-Corruption Commission through an executive bill. nd Delivering the 22 Combined Convocation Lecture of the University of Maiduguri, held on Friday 15 April, 2016 with a theme Ni g e ri a : Co rr u p ti o n , Ba d Governance and Insecurity'', Professor Munzali said that the functions of such Commission should include coordinating the fight against corruption, as well as the establishment of a strong and effective system for the detection, exposure and punishment of corruption. The former NUC Scribe stated that the required leadership to confront and fight corruption which was lacking before had now been brought forth at the centre by the last elections. He explained that, for the Government to achieve this, there must be support from all and sundry, to bring about the desired change in attitudes, processes and procedures and to build institutions that are strong enough to withstand attempts that may be made by future dictators who might want to return the nation to the status quo ante. Professor Munzali observed that, on the political front, the Nigerian people had taken an important step towards ensuring that henceforth elections are free, fair, credible and acceptable, adding that there was need for improvement on the achievements recorded by Professor Attahiru Jega-led INEC. He noted that one of the fall outs of that election ought to be the restoration of internal democracy within political parties and the elimination of god-fatherism and the misuse of incumbency to cling to power. On the nation's economy, Professor Munzali advised that there was need for the Federal Government to either ban imports of goods which the country could produce or tax them so highly that it won't make economic sense for any consumer who earns his money legitimately to buy them, adding that the Government should take all measures to protect its local textile and other industries against cheap Chinese and other imports and smuggled goods.

The Visitor to the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) and President Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR has charged the nd University which held its 22 th combined convocation and 40 Anniversary celebrations last th Saturday April 16 , 2016 to intensify research into positive ways of dealing with the consequences of shrinking of the Lake Chad Basin and its associated aquifers. In the Visitor's address at the convocation ceremony, read by his representative, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON, the President said that, although, part of the Lake Chad Basin was strategically located in Borno State, its current state of decline was of utmost concern to member Countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), which comprised Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Algeria. Other member Countries are Liberia, Congo, Sudan and the Central African Republic. According to Mr. President, Statistics and satellite imaging had shown that the lake had receded to neighbours and advancing in practical terms true brotherhood and sisterhood. “the primary beneficiary of the vision of cooperation with these Countries would be Maiduguri, hence the need for the University of Maiduguri to make itself highly relevant and central to its immediate environment”. He gave some of the key areas where these collaborations were most required to include National security and diversification of the economy and maintained that these were his administration's top priority following the activities of insurgents and steep declines in crude oil revenues.
